I Went from Competing in a Competition to Judging It

It’s crazy how the tables have turned. I recently received an email from an organizer of the Morehouse Business Plan Competition. I know him really well since I’ve competed in the competition for the past three years. As I noted in my previous blog post I won last year. Thus, he was reaching out to see if I’m willing to be a judge and score the submissions this year. I gladly accepted the offer. I love the Morehouse Entrepreneurship Center, they’ve made a huge impact on me and my business, specifically with funding of course but also with the presentation training. I love my alma mater, but Morehouse is the only HBCU doing this type of competition that provides a significant amount of funding for college entrepreneurs.

Email I received about the competition:

It’s amazing to think back to three years ago when I first competed in the competition. I would have never imagined that a few years later I would be placed in a position of authority to judge entries. That’s the motivation I need to keep going, little wins and milestones like this remind me why I can’t give up. God will truly bless you beyond your expectations if you stay faithful and focused on your mission. I’ve been focused and faithful in pursing my dreams and this milestone was almost like someone saying to me,

“hey you’re movin on up!” lol

I have to review the plans via YouNoodle:

Here are some of the questions I have to answer about the ideas:

My feedback will help determine which teams (or individuals) will advance to the finals, where they will present in front of a panel of judges at Morehouse College. This opportunity is great for my personal branding because I’m being seen as an authority in the field of entrepreneurship. I also love the fact that I get the chance to fine tune my business plan consulting skills, being that the judges are required to leave detailed feedback on all of the plans.I am excited to be on the other end of the spectrum judging and providing critical feedback for young college entrepreneurs. I have six plans to judge and they are all innovative ideas. However, only one person (or team)  will win the grand prize of $6000 to jumpstart their entrepreneurial journey!
