I’m Moving to NYC to Work for Yelp!

I was officially offered a position at Yelp yesterday! I am moving to New York City on saturday to start my new job as an account executive! I am really excited because Yelp is not only a fast growing company with a lot of opportunity, but I genuinely love and use their product ALL the time, especially when trying to find new restaurants. I consider myself a bit of a Yelp snob, if a business doesn’t have at least three stars or more, forget about it! Not eating there! Lol jk but really, I use it to determine new restaurants to check out or foods to try and to find other great local places.

I did an onsite interview and loved the office, it reminded me of Google. The office has a young staff and is a vibrant, casual work environment with a fully stocked kitchen and ping pong table. I only applied to jobs with this type of work environment, and whose product I use and love. I think it makes work more fun when you truly believe in the company that you work for. I applied to companies ranging from Dropbox to Meetup. I picked companies with a casual fun environment because I know I can just be me, and rock my fro or my hair nicely wrapped without judgment (natural hair problems lol).

I hate stuffy work environments :p.

Anywho, I am stoked to be at Yelp because they have an awesome sales training program, which is about 60 days long. As an aspiring entrepreneur, having the ability to sell is crucial. Therefore, I am looking forward to the opportunity to hone and develop my selling skills. There’s a quote from Donald Trump that I love, “don’t work to earn, work to learn”.  I’m excited about working in a fast paced environment like Yelp because I know I’m going to learn a lot.

You may be wondering, what’s going to happen to My College Hustle? I’m still working on it. However, the release has been a bit delayed due to a few buggy elements in the app. The app is set to launch in a few weeks, and I’m super excited! I will be working on the app during my free time both early in the morning and after I get off work. I needed to start generating income so I could do more things for the app and offset my dwindling bank account lol.

I don’t know how long I will be in New York, but I plan on making the most out of my time there by constantly networking and meeting new people. It’s amazing how God opens doors when you submit to his will instead of your own. For the longest time I had tunnel vision and I was so gung ho on moving to San Francisco that I shut myself off from other opportunities. At first, I only applied to jobs in San Francisco and nothing much came of it. I even applied to Yelp in San Francisco and didn’t get the job! However, as soon as I became more open minded about working and living in a different location, an opportunity opened up. I applied to jobs in both NYC and Boston. I was contacted for an interview and offered the job from Yelp within two weeks! It’s crazy how fast God can work when you open up and stop being so stubborn and let him do his thing.

Although, I still hope to one day live in San Francisco at some point in my life, ( contingent on if it’s what God wants me to do) but for now he wants me in NYC, so that’s where I’ll be! I will be crashing with my sister for a while in Queens until I can afford my own apartment. She’s only three stops from Manhattan which is super convenient, so come this saturday I will be a New Yorker and Yelper! Woot!
